The Journey in Photos: From Tofino Harbor to Hot Springs Cove

Hot Springs Cove Tour in Tofino

There’s nothing quite like relaxing in natural geothermal pools with the Pacific Ocean as your backdrop. Your journey begins aboard a covered cabin cruiser in Tofino as you travel 27 nautical miles north to Maquinna Provincial Park.

Once you arrive, enjoy a 2 km boardwalk hike through ancient old-growth cedar forest before reaching the Hot Springs Cove pools and change room area. Here, you’ll have up to two hours to soak and unwind in a series of natural hot spring pools that cascade toward the ocean. As the tide rises, some pools cool while others remain beautifully warm—creating a unique, ever-changing experience.

Don’t miss the signature waterfall massage, where you can stand beneath the cascading hot spring water for a natural spa moment surrounded by wilderness.

After your soak, you’ll return along the boardwalk to meet your boat and cruise back to Tofino. Our guided boat tour to Hot Springs Cove offers wildlife viewing along the way including whales, sea otters, sea lions and more.

Please note: access to Hot Springs Tour from Tofino is limited, and only one boat per day is permitted to enter the site. We recommend booking early to secure your spot.

What To Expect on the Tour

The Hot Springs Cove boardwalk in Maquinna Provincial Park is approximately 2 km and includes around 700 steps. The route can be wet, uneven, and occasionally slippery, so sturdy footwear is strongly recommended.

Access to the natural geothermal pools involves a natural rock area with uneven footing. Water shoes are recommended for comfort and safety in and around the pools.

Hot Springs Cove is a remote provincial park with no fresh water, stores, or services available on site. Please bring everything you need for your visit.

The geothermal pools are naturally hot (averaging around 50°C). We recommend pacing your time in the springs, staying hydrated, and taking breaks as needed to ensure a comfortable experience.

Unforgettable Encounters: Guest Highlights

They did everything to ensure the best possible experience. We were asked 2 days out if we could bump up a day sooner as the weather was to be ideal if we could. We did and that was a great decision as the weather on our original day would have been brutal. Alistair was our guide and was very friendly and informative without being overly so. Had a pleasant conversation both ways and he was very patient with my many questions. We saw a lot of gray whales, otters and fowl on the way to the hot springs. On the way back, Allister showed us an island of sea lions and then we got word of orcas in the area. He made every effort to ensure that we got to see them and it was amazing! I'm a hard grader but this was an easy 5/5 stars.

We did the Hot Springs tour with our two boys age 10 and 6. Well organized tour. Riley was our Captain and he was fantastic. Own our journey to the hot springs, Riley specifically looked out for wildlife for us. We saw grey whales, rafts of sea otters and even a bear on shore during our trip. The boat was clean with both indoor and outdoor space. The hike to the springs was not difficult and the hot springsthemselves were so unique as they were located essentially in a crack in the rocks with 4-5 small pools and a waterfall of hot water filling them . This was the highlight of our trip to Tofino.

We did the hot springs tour and it was amazing! The hot springs themselves are beautiful and in a fantastic spot. Our captain, Alastair, was super knowledgable about the history of the local indigenous groups, the different wildlife we spotted along the way and was fantastic at driving the boat through some big swells. We saw tons of sea otters, which we slowed down to get good photos, and some sea lions as well. Can not recommend doing your tour with The Whale Centre more highly, they were amazing!
