Humpback Whales in Tofino

The waters surrounding Tofino are one of the best places on the west coast of Vancouver Island for humpback whale watching. Each year, these enormous and graceful whales return to the nutrient-rich waters of Clayoquot Sound, where they feed throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Watching one of these giants surface beside your boat is an unforgettable wildlife experience.

Humpback whales are famous for their dramatic behaviours, including powerful tail slaps, deep dives, and the occasional spectacular breach. On a Tofino whale watching tour, you may witness these incredible displays.

When Can You See Humpback Whales in Tofino?

Humpback whales are typically seen around Tofino from March through October.

After spending the winter months in warmer breeding grounds near Hawaii and Mexico, humpbacks migrate north to feed in the rich waters of the Pacific Northwest. Clayoquot Sound provides an ideal feeding habitat thanks to its abundance of bait fish and krill.

During the summer months, sightings of humpback whales are very common on whale watching tours departing from Tofino, making this the perfect time to experience these magnificent creatures.

How Big Are Humpback Whales?

Humpback whales are among the largest animals on Earth:

  • Adults grow up to 16 metres (52 feet) long

  • They can weigh up to 40 tonnes

  • Their long pectoral fins can reach 5 metres (16 feet) in length

Each humpback whale has a unique pattern on the underside of its tail, which researchers use to identify individual whales as they travel along the coast. Many of the humpbacks seen near Tofino return to the same feeding areas year after year.

Why Are Humpbacks Common Near Tofino?

The waters surrounding Tofino and Clayoquot Sound are among the most nutrient-rich marine ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest.

Cold, nutrient-rich ocean currents create ideal feeding conditions for humpback whales. They can often be seen lunge-feeding through schools of fish or diving deep to hunt for prey. Because food is so abundant here, humpbacks often remain in the region for several months each year.
