MARINE VESSEL GUIDE 2019
Schedule: Full Time/40 Hours a Week
The Whale Centre, a Tofino based whale watching, bear watching and hot springs tour company is seeking marine vessel guides for the 2019 season. Applicants should have tourism experience, with knowledge of local wildlife and the Tofino area. Successful candidates have to be familiar with the local waters and will know how to safely operate a vessel in variable weather and sea conditions. The captains are also expected to have a thorough knowledge of local ecology, indigenous and migratory wildlife common to our region, a grasp of local First Nation’s history, and the ability to share their knowledge passionately with our guests.
Operate 12 passenger open vessel and covered vessels
Knowledge required - whales, marine mammals, bears, rainforest ecosystem.
Hosting clients pre / post trip and dealing with their concerns
Prepare people for being on the water
Have knowledge of local history, marine wildlife, and basic vessel mechanics
Wash / Maintain / repair equipment
Report vessel operation problems to supervisor
Complete vessel log at end of day.
Required skills and Knowledge:
Marine Emergency Duties A3
Marine Basic First Aid
Restricted Operator Certificate (GMDSS)
Previous tourism experience preferred
Excellent interpersonal and time management skills
Must have great verbal communication skills
Must be available to work weekends, some evenings and holidays
Basic knowledge of marine wildlife
Team oriented skills
Radio Operators Certificate Marine (ROC-M)
Enjoy being on the water
Number of positions: 2
These positions are seasonal from April - October, June - September.
Required Certifications: SVOP, MED-A2 or A3, ROC-M, Marine Basic First Aid
