Best Time to See Whales in Tofino: A Month-by-Month Guide

If you're planning a visit to Tofino, whale watching is one of the most unforgettable experiences on the West Coast. The waters off the west coast of Vancouver Island are incredibly rich in nutrients, supporting an abundance of marine life throughout the year.

From migrating giants to resident whales that feed in our local waters, there is always something incredible to see offshore. Here’s a guide to the best time to see whales on a Whale Watching Tour in Tofino, and which species you’re most likely to encounter during each season.

Spring Whale Watching (March – May)

Spring is one of the most exciting times for whale watching in Tofino. During this season, the annual migration of the Grey Whale brings thousands of whales along the west coast as they travel between breeding lagoons in Mexico and feeding grounds in Alaska.

Many grey whales stop in the waters around Tofino to rest and feed, making spring one of the best opportunities to see these incredible animals.

Spring is also when the first Humpback Whale sightings begin to increase along the coast. These powerful whales arrive in the region to feed on krill and schooling fish.

For a short window in mid-March, lucky guests may even spot the elusive Fin Whale, the second-largest animal on Earth. While sightings are rare, these incredible whales occasionally pass through Tofino’s offshore waters during early spring.

Summer Whale Watching (June – September)

Summer is peak wildlife season in Tofino. By this time, many Humpback Whale have returned to the area and are feeding actively throughout the region.

You may see humpbacks:

  • Breaching

  • Tail slapping

  • Bubble-net feeding

  • Diving with their iconic flukes

During the summer months, about 240 Grey Whales also remain in the area as resident whales, feeding in the kelp beds and shallow coastal waters near Tofino.

Another highlight of summer tours is the possibility of encountering Orca, also known as killer whales. The whales seen most often around Tofino are transient (Bigg’s) killer whales, which travel in small family groups and hunt marine mammals.

In addition to whales, guests frequently see sea otters, sea lions, harbour seals, bald eagles, and seabirds during summer tours.

Fall Whale Watching (October – November)

Fall is another excellent time to see Gray Whale as they migrate south along the coast toward their winter breeding lagoons.

These migrating whales often pass close to Tofino’s coastline, giving guests fantastic opportunities for sightings. The fall migration can be dramatic, with whales travelling steadily south while stopping periodically to feed.

Many Humpback Whale also remain in the region through October before beginning their long journey toward tropical breeding grounds.

Are There Whales in Tofino Year-Round?

Yes! One of the special things about whale watching in Tofino is that whales can be seen throughout the year.

Orca, particularly transient killer whales, travel through the region year-round as they hunt seals, sea lions, and other marine mammals.

Because of the incredible productivity of these waters, wildlife sightings are common on tours no matter the season.
