April Whale Watching in Tofino: Grey Whales, Orcas & Incredible Spring Sightings (2026)
What Tofino Whale Watching Tours have seen in April
April has brought an exciting start to the whale watching season here in Tofino. With calm spring conditions and longer days, we’re already seeing an incredible diversity of whales moving through Clayoquot Sound and the open Pacific.
From migrating giants to powerful predators, every trip has been full of unforgettable wildlife moments.
Grey Whales: The Stars of Spring
Grey whales are the highlight of April, and they’ve officially arrived in strong numbers. These coastal feeders migrate north from Mexico and stop along the west coast of Vancouver Island to rest and feed. We are also welcoming back our Resident Grey Whales who do not migrate north but prefer to stay in Tofino for the spring, summer and fall. Our favourites like Lasso and Harmony have been spotted feeding in Ahous Bay.
We’ve been seeing the grey whales close to shore, often in calm, protected waters—perfect for viewing. Watch for their distinct heart-shaped blows and mottled grey bodies as they roll and dive just below the surface.
Humpback Whales: Powerful and Playful
Humpback whales are beginning to make their presence known offshore. Known for their acrobatic displays, we’ve already seen some early-season activity, including tail slaps and powerful dives.
As the season progresses, we expect even more humpback encounters as they return to rich feeding grounds off the coast.
Killer Whales: A Rare and Thrilling Sight
Killer whales (or orcas) have made a few exciting appearances this April. These apex predators travel in family groups and are always a breathtaking sight.
Encounters are unpredictable but unforgettable—whether it’s a pod cruising through the sound or hunting along the outer coast. This month we have had visits from several different groups of killer whales including the T030’s, T050B’s and more!
Fin Whales: The Ocean’s Speedsters
One of the more rare and special sightings this month has been fin whales—the second-largest animals on Earth. Sleek, fast, and powerful, they’re not commonly seen on every trip, which makes each encounter even more memorable.
Their tall blows and long, streamlined bodies make them stand out when they surface.
