What to Wear on a Whale Watching Tour in Tofino

Heading out on a whale watching tour in Tofino? One of the most common questions we get is: “What should I wear?”

The short answer: dress warmer than you think and be ready for ocean spray.

Out on the water, conditions can change quickly—even on sunny days. Here’s exactly how to stay warm, dry, and comfortable.

1. Dress in Layers (Always)

Tofino’s coastal weather is unpredictable. Mornings can be cool, afternoons sunny, and the wind on the water adds an extra chill.

We recommend:

  • Base layer (long sleeve or thermal)

  • Warm mid-layer (fleece or sweater)

  • Outer layer (waterproof or windproof jacket)

👉 Even in summer, it can feel 5–10°C colder on the ocean.

2. Waterproof Outerwear is Key

If you're on an open boat (like a zodiac), you may get splashed.

Bring:

  • Waterproof jacket or rain shell

  • Rain pants (if it is raining and you are on the cabin cruiser boat)

  • Good news: We provide Mustang flotation suits for the Open Boat Tours - these suits keep you warm and are your flotation if needed.

Wear Proper Footwear

Boat decks can be wet and slippery.

Best options:

  • Waterproof boots or shoes

  • Runners with good grip

Avoid:

  • Flip flops (you can get away with flip flops in the summer months)

  • Heels

  • Anything you don’t want to get wet

4. Don’t Forget the Extras

These small items make a big difference:

  • Hat or toque (wind can be cold!) - we sell these in our office.

  • Gloves (spring & fall especially) - also have these for sale in the office.

  • Sunglasses (glare off the water is strong)

  • Sunscreen (yes—even on cloudy days) - please apply this before you arrive for the tour.

5. Seasonal Tips

Spring (March–May)

  • Cooler temperatures, especially during grey whale season

  • Bring warm layers + gloves

Summer (June–August)

  • Milder, but still cool on the water

  • Light layers + windbreaker

Fall (September–October)

  • Crisp mornings, fewer crowds

  • Dress warm—layers are essential

Open Boat vs Covered Boat

Your clothing choice also depends on your tour:

  • Open boats (zodiac style): more exposure → dress warmer in warm layers (long pants, long sleeve tee shirt and a sweater)

  • Covered boats: more protection, but still cool outside → warm jacket, sweater, pants

Quick Checklist

Before you head out:

✔ Layers
✔ Waterproof jacket
✔ Closed-toe shoes
✔ Warm accessory (hat/gloves)
✔ Sunglasses (wear these even if it is overcast or if there is fog)
