The Return of Sea Otters to Vancouver Island
A West Coast Comeback Story You Can Witness with The Whale Centre
From Absence to Abundance on the Wild Coast
If you’ve joined us on a tour with The Whale Centre, you may have spotted a raft of sea otters drifting peacefully in the kelp. It’s a moment that feels timeless—but their presence here is actually part of a powerful comeback story.
Sea otters once thrived along the entire coast of Vancouver Island, playing a vital role in keeping marine ecosystems healthy. Today, they’ve returned to areas like Clayoquot Sound—but only after disappearing for nearly a century.
A Coast Without Otters
In the late 1700s, the maritime fur trade changed everything. Sea otter pelts were among the most valuable furs in the world, and intense hunting quickly decimated populations along the Pacific coast.
By the early 1900s, sea otters had vanished entirely from British Columbia. For decades, the waters around Tofino and beyond were missing one of their most important species.
A Bold Reintroduction
Everything changed between 1969 and 1972, when 89 sea otters were reintroduced from Alaska to Checleset Bay near Kyuquot Sound.
It wasn’t an instant success—only a small number survived those early years. But that small group held on, and slowly, the population began to grow.
A Remarkable Comeback
Over the following decades, sea otters expanded their range along the west coast of Vancouver Island.
Today, they can be found throughout much of the region, including around Vargas Island and the outer coast of Clayoquot Sound—areas we regularly explore on tour.
From just a few dozen animals, the population has grown into the thousands. It’s one of Canada’s most successful marine conservation stories.
Why Sea Otters Matter
Sea otters are what scientists call a keystone species—which means their presence shapes the entire ecosystem.
By feeding on sea urchins, they allow kelp forests to flourish. These kelp forests:
Provide habitat for fish and marine life
Help absorb carbon
Protect our coastline
When you see sea otters, you’re also seeing a healthier ocean.
See Them in the Wild
Sea otters are now a regular sighting on many of our tours at The Whale Centre—often floating in groups, wrapped in kelp, or diving for food along the rocky shoreline.
While no wildlife sighting is ever guaranteed, exploring the outer coast of Tofino gives you a great chance to witness this incredible species in its natural habitat.
