When is the Best Time for Whale Watching in Tofino
The Best Time for Whale Watching in Tofino
Tofino is one of the best places in Canada to see whales in the wild. The waters of Clayoquot Sound are rich in marine life, attracting several species of whales throughout the year. While grey whales migrate past the coast in the spring, many stay to feed in the area, and humpback whales and killer whales are regularly spotted through the summer and fall.
Whale Watching by Season
Grey Whales (March – November)
Grey whales migrate past Tofino on their journey north and about 240 resident grey whales remain in Clayoquot Sound to feed for the season.
Humpback Whales (March – September)
Humpback whales are frequently seen feeding in the rich waters off Vancouver Island. They arrive in spring and stay until the fall.
Fall (September – October)
Resident Grey whales are still feeding in Clayoquot Sound late into the fall.
Year-round (12 month a year)
Transient Killer Whales are in our waters year round. We never know when they will show up on a tour but we typically see them about 2 - 3 times a week in Tofino.
