Bear Watching Tours in Clayoquot Sound
Step into one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on the West Coast. Our bear watching tours explore the quiet, sheltered waters of Clayoquot Sound, where black bears emerge along the shoreline to forage at low tide—turning over rocks in search of crabs, fish, and marine life.
With over 40 years of experience on these waters, The Whale Centre team knows exactly where to go and when to be there. Our small-group tours (max 12 guests) are designed for quiet, respectful viewing—giving you front-row access to natural, undisturbed behaviour.
Travel through calm, protected inlets where every turn offers the possibility of more wildlife—eagles overhead, seals in the shallows, and bears moving along the coastline just metres away.
The Tofino Bear Watching Tour is conducted on calm, protected waters with no swell and is recommended for all ages and guests.

Best Time to See Black Bears
Our bear watching tours run April through October, aligned with black bears emerging from hibernation and coastal foraging patterns. Bears are most active around low tide when they feed on intertidal life — giving you the best chance of sightings. We start to see the bear cubs out on the shoreline in late May.
Our tour times are set daily to leave on the low tide. You can book online or call us at 1-888-474-2288 or pop into our office to reserve your bear watching tour seats. It is highly recommended to book in advance to secure a spot, particularly in the spring and summer months.

Why Tofino is One of the Best Places for Bear Watching
The remote waterways surrounding Tofino offer some of the best coastal bear watching opportunities in Canada. The calm, protected inlets of Clayoquot Sound create ideal habitat for the black bear, which frequently forage along the shoreline during low tide.
Unlike inland bears, coastal black bears rely heavily on the ocean for food. As the tide recedes, they emerge from the old-growth rainforest and walk the rocky beaches turning over stones in search of crabs, fish, and shellfish in the rich intertidal zone.
Because bears often follow the shoreline while feeding, boat-based wildlife tours can safely observe them from the water without disturbing their natural behaviour. The sheltered channels and quiet bays of Clayoquot Sound also make it possible to explore several different bear habitats in a single trip.
Along the way, guests may also encounter other incredible coastal wildlife, including bald eagles, harbour seals, and blue herons, making every outing a memorable wildlife experience.
If you are looking to include both whale watching and bear watching check out our 4-hour adventure on the Bear & Whale Combo Tours.

Tofino Bear Watching Tour FAQ
What time of day are black bears most active?
The best time to view black bears is on the low tide. We schedule our bear watching tours around the daily low tides—select the “Book Now” button to view current departure times.
How close can you get to the black bears on the boat tour?
Your guide will approach carefully and respectfully, keeping a safe distance so the bears can continue feeding naturally without disturbance.
What if I am prone to seasickness?
This tour is conducted on calm, protected waters in Clayoquot Sound. There is no swell, so seasickness is very unlikely.
Can children join the Bear Watching Tours?
Yes—especially on our heated cabin cruisers designed for families. Infants and small children are not able to go out on the open boat.
Is there a washroom on board?
The only bear watching tour boat with a washroom is the Browning Passage boat. We recommend using the washroom at our office during check-in and avoiding large drinks right before your tour.
