Overview

The largest of the eared seals family, a full grown male Steller sea lion can weigh up to 2,500 pounds and be 11 feet long. Clayoquot Sound is home to over a 1000 Steller sea lions; the largest colony at Long Beach is home to most of this population. They can be seen: sunning, sleeping and socializing both on the rocks and in the water. Further up the coast there are other smaller haul outs on Plover Reefs and Cleland Island, since these two locations are very close in proximity the same animals move from one spot to the other throughout the summer months. Lone sea lions are commonly seen in the waters throughout Clayoquot Sound, including in the harbor near the wharfs.
